Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
