Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
