Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
