Multiple passengers and crew have been injured after a Delta Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia encountered significant turbulence on Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it landed at Sydney Airport, a company official told. A number of the onboard staff sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services reported they assessed five patients, and transferred a trio to the hospital with minor injuries that such as back pain and head pain. Those affected were between their 30s up to the 70s.

The event represents the newest example of planes experiencing severe turbulence, with aviation specialists pointing out that global warming is a significant contributor.

The aircraft was carrying nearly 250 travelers and a crew of 15 on the wide-body jet, the Delta spokesperson said, clarifying that the plane landed "safely" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday morning.

The NSW Ambulance Service reported they received a call just a mere three minutes prior to the plane arrived, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.
