2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Producer to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Reception

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct vision.

The president expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement echoes a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.

Here is the full message from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game testing phase was informative. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to consideration and revamped the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our fans.

The trust in this project grows every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming field is vast, having spent the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all excited to continue witnessing the progress of the game in the time to follow.

David

Experience of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman currently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that change every round. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."

The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or supported systems, but players can look forward to further news as development continues.
